HOW TO WRITE FINAL YEAR RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Many undergraduates would give up anything to avoid writing a research proposal but only,unfortunately, nearly all supervisors request for a proposal. The only route of escape will be to understand the procedures for writing an acceptable proposal, It is noteworthy to say that your proposal creates a first impression in the sight of your supervisor- a well-drafted proposal will make him look following you through your research process whereas on the other hand, if it is poor writing, you might as well start praying to get his attention.
What then is a research proposal?
It is a brief summary of your intended research work written in a coherent manner; it is usually about 2,500 words or less depending on your topic of interest. It states the overall area of study in which your research is categorized and it points to knowledge and current debates already established on the topic.
Below are the components of a good proposal:
- Title
This is the summary of your proposed research expressed in a concise form. It is also called your main idea. It is usually the first thing a supervisor would read so it is expedient that you shape your topic carefully to be catchy enough.
- An abstract is a one-paragraph summary of your research project; it is also called the introduction. It is usually about a 100 words. It gives the reader an opportunity to quickly grasp the whole idea of your research. It helps your readers to make a fast judgment about your intending project. Abstract differs based on your filed and research topics but basically, it summarizes the purpose, problem, methods,and significance of the study.

- Literature Review
It refers to all evidence about your topic of interest. Nowadays, researchers are confronted with enormous data thus making it impossible for them to filter information. However, it is advisable that each idea should be summarized in a paragraph highlighting the most pertinent t your argument. Ideas must be presented in a way that allows readers to grasp the argument your research is trying to make.
- Aims and Objectives
The aim is also known as the research purpose or goal and it gives is a clear and wider indication of what the researcher wishes to achieve. For example, the hypothesis you intend to verify could be your aim. The objective is, therefore, the parameters you will use to achieve the aims.
- Research Questions
The proposal must raise certain questions that would guide your research, It is very important that you sit down to reflect on key questions that you intend to answer but it is best to think of two primary questions that would act as your lead into your secondary questions.
- Research Designs and Methods
Here the researcher discusses the methods that he/she intends to use to carry out the research and also an analysis of the techniques. The writer must keep in mind that specific database, references to key sites, fieldwork, interviews,and authors must be stated.
- Bibliography/Citation
This refers to the referencing of all scholarly material used in the process of your research. You must cite any material used in during your research.
