People often mistake an Article review for an annotated bibliography because both forms of academic writing are linked to the collective comprehension and summarization of related academic sources. However, that is the only similarity between both forms of academic writing. An annotated bibliography can be differentiated from an article review on the following grounds:

Distinction based on structure:
The structure of both forms of academic writing differs in so many ways, these ways include:
- In an annotated bibliography, the bibliographic citation is only provided once in the academic piece, which is normally at the beginning of the write-up. However, in an article review, the list of references is provided more than once, that is, at the beginning of each subheading(if any) and at the end of the academic piece.
- In an annotated bibliography, the full bibliographic citation is arranged either alphabetically or according to the requirements of the referencing style in the discipline. Based on the components of both forms of academic writing, the ways in which they differ include:
- The summarization of an Article in an Article Review can be 200 words and above, depending on the requirements of the assignment. On the other hand, the summarization of a research source in an annotated bibliography is 150-200 words maximum. Hence, an Article review is more in-depth than an annotated bibliography.
- An annotated bibliography can be assigned as part of much bigger research work or on its own. An article review, on the other hand, can only be assigned on its own.
- Research work in an annotated bibliography can only be used once, that is when it is being summarized briefly. However, in an Article Review, a cited piece can be referred to at different intervals depending on the number of words and the number of subtopics associated with the piece.
- An Article review can make use of in-text citations or even footnotes, whereby, an annotated bibliography can not make use of these forms of referencing.
- An Article review is written in form of an expository essay, it is more in-depth in terms of criticisms, opinions and so on. An annotated bibliography, on the other hand, is written in form of a complex list or like an endnote.

- The aim of an annotated bibliography is to prove the credibility and accuracy of different sources or the sources used in particular research relating to a specific subject matter. The aim of an Article review is to provide the current understanding of a subject matter based on different sources.
- The aim of an annotated bibliography is to provide adequate explanations which will serve as evidence for the validity of the cited sources. An article review on the other hand makes room for opinions and even the creation of new ideologies relating to the designated subject matter.
- An article review gives readers an overview of the related problem or subject matter by explaining the top-notch sources relating to the subject matter. Whereas depending on the nature of the annotated bibliography, the sources can only be narrowed down to specific sources, these sources must not be of high standard or quality.
Distinction based on definition:
- An Annotated Bibliography can be defined as the brief summarization of a list of cited resources like books, journals, articles and so on. In other words, an Annotated Bibliography provides a brief account of the available resources which were used to conduct the research. On the other hand, an Article review can be defined as an academic article which summarizes the current state of understanding regarding a particular topic. It can also be regarded as a piece of writing which contains the different theories, research methods and conclusions from specific scholars regarding a particular topic.
Additional Differences:
- An annotated bibliography examines each source based on its relationship to the topic. An article review, on the other hand, brings together different sources relating to the subject matter and examines the areas where these articles agree or disagree.
- An annotated bibliography gives the readers the freedom to accept or reject the idea of exploring the available sources. An article review, on the other hand, gives the readers a particular understanding of the subject matter.
- An annotated bibliography ought to be arranged either alphabetically or according to the requirements of the referencing style in the related field. Whereas, an Article review can be arranged according to objectives like; the order of specific happenings, cause and effect, problem and solution and so on.
- An annotated bibliography contains facts about the sources of information used in or for research. An article review, on the other hand, contains the summary, evaluation and analysis of a particular topic or argument.
- An article review can be derived from an annotated bibliography and it can be on its own. On the other hand, an annotated bibliography can not be a product of an article review.
