An endnote is a form of citation which is issued at the end of a research paper. In other words, It is a form of citation which refers the readers to a specific place at the end of the academic piece they can figure out the source of information or words quoted in the body of the paper. Depending on the nature of the paper and the referencing style used in the paper, the method of reference could be a super-scripted text or number which will be arranged either alphabetically or numerically.

The purpose or use of an endnote in academic writing includes the following:

• To provide a form of uniformity to the research paper.
• To include additional opinions regarding issues related to the subject matter of the paper without diverting from the initial topic of the research paper.
• To serve as a means of providing additional information regarding the publication of the book to the reader.
• To give credit to the sources cited or used during the course of writing an academic piece.

HOW TO USE AN ENDNOTE IN AN ACADEMIC PAPER

The use of end-notes in an academic paper is less tedious, it simply requires a superscribed number or alphabet to be inputted at the end of the quoted sentence. The essence of the superscribed number or alphabet will be direct the reader to the part at the end of academic piece which will provide a full reference of the quoted text or additional notes regarding the superscribed text. However, the mode of citing an end-note tends to vary depending on the referencing style used.

THE USE OF ENDNOTES IN MLA REFERENCING STYLE

The following points should be noted when citing an endnote in MLA style:

• The quoted sentence should be indicated with superscribed numbers. These numbers ought to appear at the end of the quoted sentence, after a period(.).
• The endnotes should be typed or inputted on a separate page directly before the list of referencing, the title ‘Notes’ or ‘Endnotes’ ought to be placed on the top center of the page.
• In the bid to input additional notes in the endnotes, it should be easy for the reader to understand and used sparingly.
• The note itself ought to commence with a commence with a corresponding number also in superscript followed by a space then the contents of the note.
• The note should appear in the same font as the rest of the document, however, it ought to be provided in a smaller font size.
• The endnote ought to be double spaced like the rest of the document however, the first line of each note should be slightly indented.

THE USE OF ENDNOTES IN CHICAGO/TURABIAN STYLE

The following points should be noted when citing Endnotes in Chicago/Turabian referencing style:

• The quoted sentence or phrase should be indicated with a superscribed number.
• The endnotes ought to be typed or inputted after the main document and appendix but before the bibliography.
• The notes should be arranged numerically. If the numbers are typed normally, it will be spaced, then the contents will be provided and ended with a period(.). If the numbers are superscribed, there will be no period(.) provided after the contents of the citation have been stated.
• The notes ought to be centered and single spaced.
• The first line of the notes should be indented half an inch from the original margin of the text, like a paragraph.
• A blank line should be added between notes and two blank lines should be added before chapters and subheadings.
• The right margin of the text should not be set at any inch.

It should be noted that the APA referencing style does not permit the use of endnotes like the other basic referencing styles, instead it uses in text citations and list of referencing.
