CV Format for Job – 7 important items in a good CV; step by step guide

Achieving the right CV Format for Job is not an easy one and sometimes might be confusing. A Curriculum Vitae is a document that Summarises the Professional, Academic and Personal life of an individual in order to entice or interest employers for the desired position. This document is written to present the applicant in a preferable light, sighting achievements recorded in his career so far, giving the hiring manager a good first impression. A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is also known as a Resume.

Format and Length

There is no particular format the CV must take, it could take different outlooks, what is important is the information it contains. The chosen format by the writer can be impressive enough for the employers and could be a good first impression. The Format of the CV must above all things be:-

Easy to Read

The whole aim of presenting your CV to employers is to look impressive and favourable, but how impressed will they be if they pick up your CV and it is too complicated to be understood. In trying to achieve our desired goals, some persons go as far as downloading Beautiful Format samples, in all our findings, it is important to bear in mind that the write-up is not dependent solely on its outlook, but on the details and information written in it. Therefore, it is of no good use, using a format that is difficult to read.

Clearly Structured

There is no need to Jamming headings together when writing your CV. Everything must not appear on one page. Space them carefully so that the employer will not see you as someone who is not orderly. Going through some CVs sometime ago, I realised that the structure used was not nice at all. Somehow, the CV appeared in a scattered and disorganised form and I just realised that it is from the format chosen from the start. It looked perfect on his laptop but looked disorganised on mine. This is not what you want to happen with your CV when looking for a Job.

The length of a Good CV should be 1-2 pages of an A4 paper. In special cases, however, especially where the applicant has a wide range of experience due to numerous places of work, a third page can be added. From Experience, I have learnt that employers do not appreciate lengthy CVs. In order to sound like the most qualified.

Some people sometimes make the mistake of Overwriting, adding extra details and trying to increase their chances. Again, understand that the length is not the concern of the employer, the information provided especially the achievements are the concern of the employer. This is why most times, in addition to the CV, some companies still ask for a Cover Letter. If the information is relevant, include it, if not, do not bore the employer with lots of junk.

What then is the right Format your CV should take?

  1. Contact Address

This includes your Name in Full, your Home Address, phone number(s), and email address. Including your date of Birth is optional and not a necessity

  1. Profile

This is the section where you try to give the employer a good impression of you, you include your personal ideologies here. Sometimes, it is called the Career objective. This statement is meant to be brief but should carry your Catchy punchline which can make the employer so impressed with you. It is not a Cover Letter so do not make it long but concise.

  1. Qualifications

Next, is your Educational Qualification; you state the levels you have attained academically. Mention the Certificates acquired with dates. Also, if you have any Professional qualifications, add them here as well. They must be concrete and not just some drive-by extras you got from casual areas. Add the dates too.

  1. Experience and Achievements

In this section, you outline previous places of employment, responsibilities you handled there and most importantly, the achievements you had there. The company’s name, job title and dates should be well stated in reverse date order.

  1. Skills/Abilities

This is where you list areas of your expertise. Most employers go straight to this point to know exactly who they are bringing into their company and what additional qualifications they possess. It is important to be truthful in this part because this might be one of the test areas during your job interview. Also, try to tilt your abilities towards your intended job so as to make the employer believe you are the right candidate for the job.

  1. Interests and Hobbies

This section is where you indicate your social inclinations. This section is tricky most times and some applicants prefer not to add it. It is Important to add interests that can relate to your desired job. For example, when applying for the role of a Customer Care Assistant, activities like Public Speaking and Meeting people will not be a bad idea. When applying as a secretary, writing should definitely be included in your Hobbies.

  1. References

You can include important persons who can stand in as referees for you. You can still decide not to add anyone but just indicate that you will provide them if needed.

  1. Your name must appear at the top of your CV, it should be as bold as possible, replacing the title.
  2. Save your CV with a professional format, not some casual slurs. Something like “Emmanuel-Daniel CV” sounds more professional than just saying, “New CV” or “My CV”.
  3. Use verbs when writing your achievements. It should come with phrases like this; ” I led a team, we achieved, I conducted, achieved great feats in, elevated the standard”, etc. This is a huge selling point and makes you look like an active performer in those previous roles.
  4. Mistakes are a huge turnoff, avoid them. Spelling and grammatical mistakes are unacceptable. Some persons go as far as making mistakes in their contact details, especially in emails. It is good to check the CV again and again before submission.
  5. Avoid Exaggerations

In other to sound attractive enough, some people decide to lie about themselves. This attitude sometimes backfires and will mean an immediate disqualification if found out. Try as much as possible to be honest in your CV.

Remember to always make your CV tilt towards your intended job. Write your CV bearing in mind, the position you intend to occupy in your chosen company. It makes the employer know you made good research before applying.

Try as much as possible to study the company you want to apply to, this will help you tailor your CV towards it. With these few steps and tips, I believe you will be able to prepare a better CV.
